You've been designing jewellery for years. What kind of wedding rings
are 'in vogue' at the moment?
High purity metals such as platinum have been soaring in popularity,
and its silver appearance enjoys a high fashion value. I have also been
working with more 22ct gold which is a very luxurious material, as it
is 91.6% pure gold, unlike 9ct gold which contains only 37.5% pure gold.
I want a very personal wedding ring - not one I can buy in the high
street. Is this very expensive?
We offer an inexpensive commission service for couples to design their
own wedding rings, which is an excellent way of ensuring a one-off,
'unique' ring. An alternative to this is my highly personal Year Ring,
which features the date of your wedding hand- carved in Roman Numerals
or our Ring of Names, which has two bands entwined personalised with
the bride and grooms names on one band and leaving the other band blank
to be engraved with children's names as and when they come along.
Everything about my day must be perfect! How can I be sure I will
be happy with the finished rings?
Versatility is very important, only once my customers are happy with
the initial design on paper do I start to make the ring. As I make each
ring by hand, partway through the process we will arrange a fitting
so the couple can see how their design is progressing and make any adjustments.
Has anything changed in the way couples go about buying their wedding
rings?
Yes. Primarily couples are breaking with tradition and opting for something
at little more individual than the plain wedding band. Over the last
few years we have seen the increasing popularity of our diamond studded
bands. They add the sparkle of diamonds to the bride's finger and some
of my clients have used this style as a joint wedding and engagement
ring. But it's not just the bride who is choosing diamond's, I am designing
more and more rings for the groom using diamonds of all shapes and sizes,
still keeping the design simple and masculine. |
How else do you help the couple?
It's important that the rings are in proportion to the wearer's hand,
the fit must be perfect and the metal and gemstones must suit their
skin colour. For example, the gunmetal finish of white gold may not
suit some people as much as fresh platinum. In addition, I also craft
rings in half millimetre size intervals, as half sizes are often required.
Is that the end of the process?
No. It's important to make sure that the rings are a perfect fit, so
I urge my customers to let me know that they are completely happy. As
a final touch, we are often asked to engrave a few special words inside
the rings. It is a nice idea to secretly engrave a message inside your
fiancés ring as an extra surprise on your special day.
We are not having a traditional church wedding and would like unusual
wedding rings to match, what would you advise?
Several of my wedding rings have been designed to echo the surroundings
of a couple's big day. For example, a beach wedding may suit one of
my exotic starfish and fish rings or a naturally shaped Mediterranean
ring and my hand engraved Celtic bands are a romantic alternative to
the traditional wedding band. I also use innovative decorative styles
such as enamelling and hammering.
What would you suggest as an original gift for my Bridesmaids, something
they can wear on the day?
Pretty silver gemstone pendants and earrings set with semi-precious
stones have proved very popular and the range of stones from blue topaz
to peridot will compliment any outfit. My year cufflinks, featuring
the date in Roman Numerals, will keep the groom or best man happy.
